Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 21, 2026

Who we are

Forward Justice is a nonprofit law, policy, and strategy center dedicated to advancing racial, social, and economic justice in the U.S. South. This policy describes how we collect, use, and share information when you visit forwardjustice.org, contact us, sign up for updates, or donate. It applies to this website, not to the separate relationships we may have with clients, partners, or co-counsel, which are governed by their own agreements and professional obligations.

Information you provide to us

  • Contact and inquiry forms. When you write to us through the site, we receive what you send: typically your name, email address, and message. Please do not send confidential or time-sensitive legal information through the website; see our Terms of Use for why.
  • Email updates. If you subscribe to our updates, we collect your email address and any preferences you choose.
  • Donations. Donations are processed by third-party payment providers. We receive information about your gift (such as your name, contact details, and amount) but your full payment details are handled by the processor under its own privacy policy. Our donation forms are provided by Bloomerang, and card payments are processed by Stripe.
  • Job and internship applications. Application materials are sent to us by email and are used only for recruiting.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our hosting infrastructure keeps server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested, timestamps) for security and troubleshooting. Cookies and similar technologies are described in our Cookie Policy, which includes an automatically updated list of what is in use and lets you manage your choices.

How we use information

We use information to respond to you, deliver updates you request, process and acknowledge donations, run and improve this website, keep the site secure, and meet our legal and financial reporting obligations. Where we use analytics or advertising tools, we use them to understand our reach and effectiveness, subject to the choices described in the Cookie Policy.

How we share information

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with: service providers who run parts of our operations for us (such as website hosting, email delivery, and payment processing) under agreements limiting their use of it; professional advisers such as auditors; and where the law requires it or where sharing is necessary to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of our systems. If Forward Justice were ever reorganized, information could be transferred as part of that transition under the same protections.

A note on our audience

Some visitors come to this site while researching issues that affect them directly, including criminal legal system involvement and voting rights. We do not run advertising trackers on our legal resource and document pages, and we do not build advertising audiences from visits to those pages.

Email communications

Every marketing or update email we send includes an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing does not affect transactional messages, such as a donation receipt.

Retention

We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above, or as required by law, then delete or de-identify it. Donation records are kept as required by tax and accounting rules.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted connections to this website. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children

This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, and to opt out of targeted advertising. We honor Global Privacy Control signals as an opt-out of targeted advertising where required. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@forwardjustice.org. We will not treat you differently for exercising them.

Links to other sites

Our site links to other organizations, court records, news outlets, and social platforms. Their privacy practices are their own; this policy does not cover them.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy from time to time; the effective date above reflects the current version, and significant changes will be noted on this page. Contact: info@forwardjustice.org, Forward Justice, PO Box 1932, Durham, NC 27702.
